Negotiating a Margin Rate with Fidelity: A Real-Life Experience

Sharing this because the community’s prior insights on negotiating margin rates proved incredibly helpful. I manage an approximately $11 million taxable Fidelity account that primarily holds S&P 500 ETFs and does not engage in frequent trading.

The goal was straightforward: secure a competitive margin rate in the event I needed to transfer assets to an IBKR Pro account to finance a home purchase. I reached out to my Fidelity advisor to discuss options and see if Fidelity could match or beat a potential competing rate.

A few days after my initial message, a Fidelity brokerage representative contacted me to gather details about the loan’s size and duration. Two days later, he followed up with an offer: a margin rate of 1.125% for all tiers, with the rate tied to Fidelity’s base rate fluctuations.

In short, the process was quite simple. This outcome wouldn’t have occurred without the experiences and input shared by others in the community. If you’re considering a margin loan or exploring competitive rates, it’s worth initiating the conversation with your broker.
